
Tiny flying insects around your house can be surprisingly difficult to identify.
I’ve had people tell me they were battling fruit flies for weeks, only to discover every insect was actually a fungus gnat.
I’ve also seen homeowners pour cleaners down drains when the real problem was sitting in a flower pot a few feet away.
That’s why I always start with identification.
The better you understand what you’re looking at, the easier it becomes to solve the actual problem.

The First Thing I Notice Is Their Body Shape
When I first spot a tiny flying insect, I don’t focus on the wings.
I look at the body.

Fruit flies usually:
- Stay around fruit and vegetables.
- Hover near trash and recycling.

Fungus Gnats vs. Drain Flies
These two also get mixed up quite a bit.
The biggest difference I notice is their appearance.
Drain flies are fuzzy.
Almost moth-like.
Fungus gnats aren’t.
They have smooth, narrow bodies and transparent wings.
I also pay attention to location.
Drain flies stay close to plumbing.
Fungus gnats stay close to plants.
If the insects never leave your bathroom, they’re probably not fungus gnats.
They’re Almost Always Connected to Damp Soil
One thing I’ve learned is that fungus gnats aren’t randomly flying around your house.
They’re there for a reason.
Whenever I find them, I immediately start checking the soil instead of the insect.
Overwatered houseplants are by far the most common situation I run into.
Moist soil creates ideal conditions for fungus gnat larvae to develop.
That doesn’t mean every watered plant will have fungus gnats.
It just means consistently wet soil gives them a much better chance.
I Always Look at the Plant Before the Insect

They spend all their time trying to identify the bug.
I spend just as much time looking at the plant.

- Is the soil constantly wet?
- Has this plant been overwatered recently?
- Is there mold growing on the soil surface?

- Are several nearby plants also affected?

Don’t Assume Every Plant Has Them
If you own twenty houseplants and only one has tiny flying insects around it, that’s useful information.

It’s that particular pot.

It’s “Why is this soil staying attractive to them?”
